As new owners to the business in the early 90’s, Jim and Kristen Glazier felt growing pains from the existing facility.

"The ornamental industry was really taking off in our area and we were able to foresee the need for a centrally located wholesale yard here in Maine " explains Kristen.

During the spring of 1992 construction was underway for a state-of-the-art wholesale yard facility. The 5 acre yard was designed with a fully computerized irrigation system using underground copper piping and an overhead watering system. Incorporated in the irrigation system is a  Dosatron slow release fertilizer injector system that maintains a daily slow release of nutrients. "This was a large added expense at the time, however, during the heat of the summer I can look out at my plants and take pride that they are growing and thriving", says Jim.

When considering the design and lay out of the yard it was important to have a large open a where the aisle ways were wide enough for the largest trucks and trailers to maneuver around, enabling the customers to pick and load their orders.

"Our primary goal for this addition to our nursery was to create a facility where our customers could restock with fresh inventory throughout the summer and fall season. We’ve gained a whole new market with Landscapers by opening the Yard", reveals Jim. "Landscapers and retailers a like can pick up plant material on a needs Basis."

Landscapers and retailers travel to the wholesale yard or request delivery of plants chosen from a long list of woody crops and evergreens. The yard is actually a wholesale and re-wholesale venture of both Roaring Brook’s plants and those from other suppliers.

"As a grower, I know that I can’t possibly grow it all," says Jim, "so I'm going to concentrate on what I can grow best. When bringing in outside plant material to stock the yard I'm looking for the best quality plants for the best price, and always in that order." explains Jim.

To date, five 130’ Ledgewood Greenhouses serve the purpose of holding and displaying plants. During the winter season the Greenhouses are covered with 4-ply white Poly for over wintering container plants.

The expertise of the Soil & Water Conservation District was also brought in to assist with the engineering design in respect to seeded waterways and proper water flow.

Now in its ninth season, the yard has hit its most profitable level, an accomplishment driven by minimal advertising and a success revealing the Glaziers acumen for pinpointing a regional need.
